Set expectations with empathy
Set expectations with empathy

Empathy and clarity can work together. Explain the required outcome, why it matters and what a successful result should look like. Then ask about constraints, resources and competing commitments.
Agree who will do what, by when and how progress will be checked. If the deadline is fixed, discuss options for scope or support. A respectful conversation still needs a clear conclusion. Record the agreement briefly so both people can refer to the same expectations later.
A workplace example
A team receives a deadline without a clear definition of completion. A conversation about the required output, quality checks and available support can prevent different assumptions from shaping the work.
Try this in practice
- Define the required result.
- Ask about constraints and support.
- Record the agreed owner and deadline.
What would a successful result look like to both people?
