Close a conversation with a clear agreement

Before ending a difficult discussion, summarise what has been agreed and what remains unresolved. Check that each person understands the action, owner, deadline and follow-up point in the same way.
Send a brief factual summary where appropriate. Avoid adding new accusations or decisions that were not discussed. At the review point, assess whether the agreement worked and adjust it if needed. A good closing turns a conversation into a practical commitment rather than leaving both people with different expectations.
A workplace example
A difficult meeting ends with everyone saying they will improve communication. Turn that intention into a specific agreement about what information will be shared, by whom and when.
Try this in practice
- Summarise the action and owner.
- Confirm timing and any open issue.
- Set a review point and record the agreement.
Could each person describe the same next step after the meeting?
