De-escalate a tense discussion

Slow the pace and return to a specific issue. Use a calm, clear voice and avoid repeating inflammatory labels. Summarise the concern you have heard and ask whether your summary is accurate.
If the conversation is no longer productive, suggest a break with an agreed return time and purpose. Do not use a pause to avoid the issue indefinitely. If threats, harassment or safety concerns arise, follow the organisation’s reporting and safety procedures. A respectful conversation does not require tolerating harmful behaviour.
A workplace example
A conversation becomes louder and less specific. Slow the exchange, summarise the issue and check understanding. If it cannot continue constructively, agree a break and the conditions for restarting.
Try this in practice
- Return to one concrete issue.
- Use a calm and direct summary.
- Pause or follow reporting procedures when needed.
What sign tells you that the conversation needs a reset?
