Set boundaries respectfully

Describe what you can do, what you cannot commit to and which alternative is available. Keep your explanation relevant to the work instead of offering a long defence. A boundary is clearer when it includes a practical next step.
For example: “I cannot complete both reviews today. I can finish the urgent one by 15:00 and the other tomorrow morning.” If priorities are unclear, ask the appropriate person to decide. Follow through consistently and revisit the arrangement when circumstances change.
A workplace example
A colleague asks for an immediate review while you are completing another agreed deadline. State what you can offer and ask for a priority decision if both tasks genuinely compete.
Try this in practice
- State your current capacity clearly.
- Offer a workable alternative.
- Confirm the agreed next step.
What alternative can you offer without making an unrealistic promise?
